Background to the story
- "Three months into our run, at the Jafffa Mosque Altoona, PA they had
Stan Lane, Bobby Eaton and Jim Cornette triple-teaming us, ‘injuring’ Pillman’s
throat with Cornette’s tennis racquet and ‘stealing’ the tag belts. The
fans went through the roof. The bookers had stumbled on a hot new
angle. Gordon Solie, told me “I’ve never seen a match that went over so
well.” He was drinking vodka martinis at the Omni. It was past midnight
and we were the last people in the bar. A guy like Solie had seen a million
angles and never sold. And yet Ric told us to kill it. Meltzer wrote -
“Zenk and Pillman vs Midnights had a hot angle, but most of the heat was
killed in the boardroom and the rest of the heat was done away with this
weekend.” But why can a hot angle? They told us they couldn’t
exploit Pillman’s throat! I’d never heard that one before! In wrestling
you exploit everything. And you never kill a hot money angle. But Flair
couldn’t follow, so he canned it. As Dusty always said ‘Its not nice to
outdraw the booker.”
