Without a doubt, the hottest tag team in the WWF is the Can-Am Connection. They are really on a roll, piling up victories on their way toward championship matches which could easily get them the titles - should they continue on their winning ways. Both principals of this fine team, Rick Martel and Tom Zenk, have previous tag team experience. This makes their union together click almost right from the start, as they have swept through the ranks of the WWF beating some of the rougher teams around with their blazing speed and unique moves.
Besides being a top-notch team, Martel and Zenk have also caught the eyes and hearts of the many young ladies following the WWF. They adopted these two handsome men as their favorites, from the first time they stepped in to the ring together. Martel has been seen in the WWF a few times previously. His fans have cheered his every move from the days when he and Tony Garea were the best tag team gracing the East Coast, winning the belts two times.
After bursting upon the scene, Zenk wrestled mostly in the AWA. Wrestling followed his bodybuilding days, when he reigned as "Mr. Minnesota," wiping out the competition. While a rookie in the AWA, Zenk showed considerable promise, teaming with present AWA World Champion Curt Hennig to compose a formidable duo. Interestingly, this took place at the same time as Martel was AWA Champion!
Despite being in the same area together, Martel and Zenk never teamed, due mostly to the rigors of Martel's schedule, and also because of the success he was having with Hennig.
Following his AWA days, Zenk moved to the Pacific Northwest, where he enjoyed major success. He then traveled around for a while, prior to forming a team with Martel.
In their first few outings, Martel and Zenk showed a lot of promise as a team - especially since their individual wresttling styles are so similar. Both men have almost identical builds, and possess extreme upper body strength. This shows in the moves they execute - they utilize quick arm drags and similar holds, which require a great deal of pulling and twisting, making their opponents scream in agony.
In addition to their similar styles and builds, Martel and Zenk have similar facial features as well, and manes of long dark hair, which send their female fans into a tizzy wherever they appear. Prior to a match, you can always tell which car they are arriving in as they approach the arena, as it is the one perpetually surrounded by pretty girls clamoring for a look at their heroes.
Wrestlemania III
Their initial matches in the WWF made the Can-Am Connection overnight sensations with the fans, a marked contrast to the many rough and tumble teams in the WWF. Both men shift into high gear from the opening bell, and their fast paced teamwork has earned them a huge fan following right away. Their moves captivated audiences all across the nation, and Martel and Zenk earned a spot in Wrestlemania III after only a few weeks in the ranks!
They made the most of their big opportunity by defeating Don Muraco and Bob Orton in the opening match of the huge extravaganza, displaying amazing slick teamwork. They had the veteran two some they were fighting dazed and confused throughout the entire match. This big win propelled Martel and Zenk into tougher matches, quickly moving them into line for a title match against the Hart Foundation. They have moved up the ladder faster than any other team in recent WWF history!
Their upward climb didn't go unnoticed by fellow wrestlers. Everyone took heed of Martel and Zenk's quick rise to the top, and experts began taking them more seriously, instead of dismissing them as just another newly formed duo. Other teams were suddenly more careful with Martel and Zenk, who proceeded to run circles around the competition, running up an amazing undefeated record - until they fell victim to one of Bobby Heenan's more elaborately planned traps, executed by Heenan's new duo, the Islanders.
The Islanders and the Can-Am Connection were the best of friends until Heenan began negotiating secretly with Haku and Tama, promising them title shots at the Hart Foundation if they could defeat Martel and Zenk. The Islanders readily agreed, since their typically scientific wrestling methods were getting them nowhere fast, and the offer of money from Heenan was appealing.
During a televised match between the Islanders and Can-Am, Heenan suddenly appeared at ringside, distracting Martel and Zenk long enough for the Islanders to work their dastardly deeds from behind. They gave their popular opponents the whipping of their lives, before the match ended in no contest. This blemished the perfect record of Martel and Zenk and lowered them in the rankings.
Martel
and Zenk didn't take this treatment sitting down. They have launched their
own campaign of revenge, designed to settle the score with Heenan once
and for all, while also restoring themselves back to the top position,
which is where they were before this whole scenario unraveled.
Brutus Beefcake
in an exposed position ....
.... credibility and dignity ....
The
entire WWF tag team scene is loaded with formidable teams, but only the
British Bulldogs and the Can-Am Connection stand head and shoulders above
the rest. These two teams are the cream of the crop, with the slight edge
going to Martel and Zenk, due to their more enthusiastic attitudes, and
their more intense hunger to attain the championships. Despite Heenan and
the Islanders being hot on their tails, the Can-Am Connection should rise
above this latest escapade and claim the WWF Tag Team titles in the near
future. They alone have the potential to bring some credibility and dignity
to the titles once again.
