1986
was a busy year for Tom Zenk - moving from Don Owen's Pacific North
West promotion back to the AWA, then north to Montreal with Rick Martel
for a spell with IWA, before finally storming the WWF, again with Martel,
in November, 1986 (as the fabulous Can-Am Connection).
The International
Wrestling Alliance (IWA) was a short-lived Montreal promotion managed by
Gino Brito, brother of Dino Bravo.
Brito evidently
saw the enormous appeal of Tom Zenk, actively promoting him as "Tom
Terrific" and a "future world champion" (beyond the bounds of IWA).
On
August, 12, 1986 - with tag partner Dan Kroffat (Phil Lafon), Zenk
won the Canadian International Tag Team Titles, defeating Bill Irwin and
Scott "Hog" Irwin - subsequently losing the belts October 13, 1986 immediately
prior to Zenk's departure, with Martel, to the World Wrestling Federation
(WWF).
During his
short period with the IWA, Tom Zenk saw both singles and tag action -
juicing, memorably, in one arena match (see Special
Events) - and showing new confidence and aggression under Martel and
Bravo's mentoring.
(Martel's
period with the IWA is memorable, not least, for the following incident!)
