Background to the story - "A few months earlier the booking committee had decided it was time to finish off Ole’s ring career. Someone in the North Tower had told them “Get that old fucker off TV.” To show everyone Ole was past his prime, The Freebirds blew him up in a match in Dayton, Ohio. The old wind bag gassed in record time but they kept him in the ring, happy to settle an old score. The plan was for Ole to be pensioned off in an 'I Quit" match with Scott Steiner. The match never took place. Instead, Herd appointed Anderson WCW chief booker. Ole was back and bitter and according to Meltzer gunning for WCW's "stable of experienced top quality workers." Meltzer warned, with uncanny accuracy, "Expect .... Tom Zenk to be putting guys over with Anderson as booker." And what exactly had I done wrong?Ole was a former Atlanta NWA promoter and charter member of the “Fuck the young guys. We never got guaranteed contracts. We never got money like that” brigade. With contracts in every guy’s pocket, Ole could no longer maneuver the boys the way he used to in the good old days. With a two-year contract and guaranteed money, our loyalty was to Uncle Ted. As far as the boys were concerned, we owed Ole nothing. Any respect he wanted, he’d have to earn like any one else. So killing off guaranteed contracts became Ole’s mission. And I became public enemy number one....Two weeks later, Meltzer confirmed “It appears both Brian Pillman and Tom Zenk are going to be phased down and out respectively."
