In the third match of the night, 2 falls to 1. The first fall ended when Punisher pinned Bloom after a power bomb. The second fall ended when Crew was disqualified after Bloom brought in a baby basket and hit Punisher who was pinning Enos. However, the match was restarted and the DQ didn't count. Bloom then quickly gave Punisher a power slam for the pin. It was no whimpy looking one. However, right before that, Bloom had been cut on his face. It looked like right next to his eye. They didn't wrestle a third fall as Bloom gave the match to Zenk and Punisher because he was cut.

TOM ZENK IN AWF TELEVISED BOUTS – “WARRIORS OF WRESTLING” 1996

The AWF, headquartered in Chicago, commenced a nationally syndicated one-hour weekly television show "Warriors of Wrestling," on the weekend of  September 21 - 22, 1996.

The exclusive distributor for the 1996 series was BKS/Bates Entertainment with advertising sales handled by All-American Television, Inc. in New York.

The launch of the AWF as a third major professional wrestling organization resulted from the initial test launch of "Warriors of Wrestling" as a syndicated series in spring 1995.  According to Jason Robar, the 1995 series  " seemed to disappear after a short period of time. The original version of the Warriors of Wrestling was filmed in a softer, film-like tone, and featured many of the current regulars in AWF"

All AWF matches were contested on a round system, with non-title matches scheduled for three four-minute rounds and all championship matches scheduled for 12-round bouts. The outcome of matches which did not end in a pin fall or submission was decided by the scoring decision of AWF judges at ringside together with the referee.

Despite its backing by BKS/Bates Entertainment (a television distribution joint venture linked to Bates Worldwide Advertising with billings of nearly $6 billion), the show was broadcast for only 12 weeks before folding under financial pressures.

Although based in Chicago, the contact  address advertised on show tapings was as follows –

Tom Zenk’s appearances in AWF “Warriors of Wrestling” 1996

Tom Zenk appeared (as “Tom Zink”) in 3 of the 12 “Warriors of Wrestling” shows broadcast in 1996. In an interview with Ken Resnick ( week 3) Tom noted that he would be wrestling on the show "next week, the week after, and the week after" – and that he might team with Sgt. Slaughter for tag action.  Despite this build-up, Tom appeared only once more on the show - (Week 4) - before severing connections with AWF.

bt

Fidel Sierra, Super Destroyer and Mr. Hughes w/ Sheik Adnan

in the fourth match on the card (Main Event) - Zenk pinned the Super Destroyer in the second round.

Round 1:  K2K (Konan 2000 – Scott Putski) and Sierra start off, with K2K getting an early edge with armdrags and hip tosses.  Mr. Fuji comes to ringside for no apparant reason.  K2K lays out all three heels, and his partners come into the ring to back him up.  Order is restored and Sierra tags to Destroyer, who doesn't fare much better than Sierra.  Tag to Zenk, who works on the arm then tags to Adams.  Adams works on the arm then tags to K2K.  K2K works on the arm and then goes for an elbow drop, only to miss.  Destroyer's advantage doesn't last for long, as K2K goes right back to work on the arm.  A tag to Zenk, who applies a hammerlock that gets countered by a drop-toe hold, and then Destroyer tags the big man, Mr. Hughes.  Zenk manages to slip away, and they start as a vertical base.  Hughes spits on his fist and then begins to wail on Zenk, who takes it in stride.  Zenk walks over and tags Adams, who doesn't do much better against Hughes. Hughes tags Sierra with 30 seconds left, and Sierra goes to an arm bar, which with 5 seconds left, Adams reverses, and as time expires Adams gets Sierra in a short arm scissors.  Hayes calls for a disqualification as the ring girl enters the ring and we go to a commercial break.

Round 2:  Adams and Siera start it off with Sierra blocking an Adams' kick attempt, only to get hit with an enzuigiri instead.  Sierra is stunned by this, and he gets tied up in the ropes.  Adams, ever the opportunist, starts hitting Sierra and goes for a cross body block, only to have Sierra get free and move out of the way. Sierra tags Hughes, who nails Adams with a clothesline, and a devastating elbow. Hughes goes up top and the fans start up a "USA" chant to spur on the British Adams. Hughes misses a somersault splash (!) and Adams tags to Zenk. Fuji leaves at this point, and Hughes tags to the Super Destroyer. Zenk nails a beautiful dropkick and hits Sierra for good measure. A whip to the ropes, and Zenk locks Destroyer into the sleeper, which promptly gets broken up by Sierra. A melee ensues, with Hughes and Adams pairing off, as well as K2K and Sierra. Destroyer whips Zenk into the turnbuckle, but Zenk hops up to the second rope and delivers a reverse cross body press which gets the three count.

Winners:  Tom Zenk, Chris Adams and Konan 2000 by pinfall

We see a replay of Zenk's dropkick, and then the reverse body press.  And once again we go to a commercial break.

Despicable Dave concludes – “The show is fast paced with excellent production values. In some respects it is like a time warp back to the early 80's, but I don't know if that is a bad thing. The only peculiarity is the round system and that doesn't intrude nearly as much as I expected. I give the first show a thumbs-up”.

Matt Doctor's Prognosis -

“If the AWF can do something about their broadcasting team and if and when The Road Warriors show up, I look for big things to happen with the AWF by the first of the new year”.

"Warriors of Wrestling"

Zenk was not scheduled this week

Despicable Dave reported – “Well, the second show was as well paced as the first. The wrestling is not great, but the show is very entertaining. I think the turnbuckle-cam is very innovative (the big guys have a cameraman stand there, the AWF bolted a fixed camera to one corner). I particularly like the way it shakes during the action and the way the wrestlers "play" to it”.

Ken Resnick talks to Tom (Z-Man) Zenk

... about his great popularity in the AWF. Zenk proclaims the superiority of "Round Wrestling" and speculates that he may soon be tag teaming with Sgt. Slaughter. Zenk is scheduled to wrestle on next week's program.

Further to this, Jason Robar reported  -

Ken asks about the rumor going around that Tom would be teaming with Sgt Slaughter.  Zink doesn't deny the rumor, only saying that it would be a great opportunity to team with Sarge.  Ken asks if Tom will be here next week, and Zink says that he'll be wrestling next week, and the week after, and the week after.  These friends exchange pleasantries and thank yous, and we cut away.

Tom (Z-Man) Zenk

bt

The Terrorist

Jason Robar reported -

To describe The Terrorist, he's a well-toned smaller guy who wears a black mask and black trunks.  Zink is introduced and as he enters we go to a commercial break.

Round 1:  Z-Man starts out with a couple of arm drags, and we go to  Warriors Corner with Mr. Fuji.  Fuji apologizes to Tito [Santana] and then says something about Pearl Harbor.  We go back to the ring.  Zink  goes to a headlock for a while and then decides to deliver a suplex before going back to the headlock...  Zink has the edge now.  He charges in and nails the Terrorist with a spinning leg lariat, which is then followed up by a headlock takedown throw.  Tom whips the Terrorist into the ropes and nails him with a savate/superkick for the win.

Winner:  "Z-Man" Tom Zink by pinfall

Interview - Konan 2000 (Scott Putski) and Ken Resnick discuss Konan's tremendous fan support in the AWF. Angel Baby comes out to ask Resnick if he wants to dance. Resnick declines so she tells him her boyfriend is coming to the AWF. "My boyfriend's back and there's gonna be trouble," she doesn't attempt to sing it and we are grateful. She refuses to reveal her boyfriends identity (do we dare to speculate the Honky Tonk Man?), but he's coming for the Z-Man.

REPORT OF A THREE DAY TOUR OF OAKVILLE, WASHINGTON STATE

Here are the results featuring Tom Zenk from AWF's 3 day tour of Oakville, Washington at the Lucky Eagle Casino (August, 16,17,18, 1996)

Day 1
Tom Zenk and Charlie Norris  bt  Bob Orton, Jr. and Greg Valentine

August 17, 1996
Lucky Eagle Casino
Oakville, WA

Day 2

Tom Zenk bt  Nailz

Another good house show in Oakville, Washington.  The crowd was really into it this evening, with one lady actually jumping the barricade to get in the Honky Tonk Man's face.  On to the results ...
MATCH 4  - Tom "Z-Man" Zenk bt  Nailz  (10 rounds)

Nailz had obviously toned down his act after last-night’s mishap—no foreign objects were used in this match...  In the end Zenk rolls him up and pins him.

Day 3

Tom Zenk over Blacktop Bully

This was probably the best show of the three-day series.  The crowd was a little tamer than it was last night, but that was OK.  There were also some fresh faces on the card, so those die-hards (like me) who made all three shows had something fresh to watch.

On to the results -

Match 1 Tom "Z Man" Zenk        vs.     Black Top Bully (3 Rounds)

I like the Z-Mans theme music....it's called "Come on feel the noise", but I can't remember who sings it.  This was a good, athletic match, with Z-Man doing some dropkicks and body presses.  The Bully is fun to listen to in the way he interacts with the crowd.  Z-Man won the match in the third when he rolled up the Bully, who was celebrating because he thought that he had just pinned The Z.

  • Match 5   Royal Rumble for a title shot
  • The wrestlers were eliminated in this order:

    1.  Nailz
    2.  The Bodyguard
    3.  Moondog Ed Morrety
    4.  Sumito
    5.  Lightning Buddy Wayne
    6.  The Honky Tonk Man
    7.  Koko B. Ware
    8.  Greg "The Hammer" Valentine
    9.  Tom "Z-Man" Zenk
    10.  The Blacktop Bully
    11.  Sargent Slaughter
    12.  Billy Two Eagles
    13.  Cheif Charlie Norris
    14.  "Playboy" Buddy Rose

...and the title shot went to "Cowboy" Bob Orton, Jr.

    Anoka, Minnesota

The AWF travelled to Anoka Minnesota featuring a card of five matches and a 12 Man Battle Royal to cap the night.  Mick Karch and President Paul Alperstein were in attendance and kicked off the night with an interview with Northen Premier Wrestling manager, Mortimer Plumtree, manager of Lucious Lenny Lane and JB Trask.

We're told that some of the matches may be televised on the nationally syndicated AWF program as all the matches were taped from tonight's card.

The round system was used like other  AWF matches.  I know there has been a lot of negative talk about the round system, but I believe if the AWF could figure a way to work it into the angles better, the change could be interesting.  Tonight however, it just seemed to get in the way.

    Match 2

Tag Team-- Tom Zenk and Billy Blaz

    vs

The Hater and The ChiTown Thug

Tom and Billy win when Billy pins the Thug

Finally the 12 Man Battle Royal----

All the local guys engage in a battle royal including some we haven't yet tonight. The Judge, The Mangler, Dr Bob and Jimbo Starr participated. Horace the Psychopath wins throwing The Judge out of the ring last.

Overall not a bad show.  I was disappointed we didn't see more non-local guys (Zenk, Nailz and The Blacktop Bully are all regulars on the indie scene here).
