Despite this, Zenk managed to build a considerable fan following tagging with Curt Hennig. Greg Gagne responded by moving in to steal Zenk's spot as Hennig's partner. In a match booked by Gagne, Zenk was 'driven into the concrete' by Larry Zbyszko and Ray 'Crippler' Stevens (Stevens was, at the time, trying to revive his career). Zenk was thus 'forced out of competition' (and out of work!). Gagne then moved in as Hennig's partner to 'avenge Tom Zenk' against Zbyszko, Bockwinkel and Stevens! Meanwhile Greg instructed Jack Lanza to tell Tom that "They (AWA) had Greg and Curt and there was nothing there for Zenk."
Curt Hennig, a second generation wrestler (the son of Larry Hennig) who knew the business well, advised Zenk not to bother complaining - "Keep your mouth shut for the first five years." Instead Curt advised him to seek work with Don Owen in the Pacific North West. Hennig did the ground work and Martel made a call to Owen, telling him "Zenk can throw a real good punch, good drip kick. He's a real technician."
In October 1985, Tom moved to NWA's Pacific North West Federation.
