GAME 1

GOAL scored on Dryden
Another one goes by Dryden
The big thing for Game One was just those names that were nothing more than that - names: Mikhailov; Vasyliev; Lutchenko; Tsygankov; Kharlamov...
Add to that the worn out uniforms and the funny hats and nobody ever thought they could be a match for the best the NHL had to offer: Tony and Phil Esposito; Peter and Frank Mahovlich; Dryden; Cournoyer; Clarke; Park and on and on.

As expected, Esposito scored 30 seconds into the game. Henderson followed six minutes later and everybody thought the rout was on. But then the real onslaught began as the Russian scored two in the first to tie it. Then the magnificent Kharlamov took control, scoring two beauties in the second, both times blowing away the Canadian defenders. In the 3rd the Canadians were just trying to catch their breath while the Russian were blasting by them. Players like Don Awrey and Rod Seiling were simply not fast enough to follow these guys. The final score was Russia 7, Canada 3.
