Wayland Coal Miners 1939

1939 Photo Insert

Keith,
The Man in the top row #2 from the left I think is Walker Stumbo of McDowell Ky

Jack B.

The man standing on the right between the third and fourth rows with his arms crossed is Frank Cooley. He was the mine foreman.
I graduated from Wayland in 1954 with your sister Phyllis. I knew Kelly and your dad. Keep up the good work on the web site. I really enjoy it.

The Picture

The wonderful picture at the top was sent in by Jack Bentley. He said it was taken in 1939. I cant help but wonder if my own Father (Guy Coleman) is in the picture. Who are all these yourg and old men's faces? What happened to each of them, did they go to World War Two? Did they make it back home safe? Send us word if you know anyone in the picture and i will add their names under the picture.
Send any information to this email address.
WaylandNews@cs.com
P.S. Does anyone else see the large half face of a man in the upper right hand corner above the Miners? Or is it just me seeing things. I've only had a few drinks of wine tonight, so it shouldn't be that.

The Face

This is for the party who recognizes the outline of a (I see it too) man's face. He seems to be looking to the left at the rest of the miners in the photo, and if studied long enough, does appear to have a miner' safety hat on.
Several years ago I had an amateur photo studio and dark room, doing several wedding albums, high school senior photos, and some photography in general. Once I developed a roll of 35 mm film for a friend and printed the photos. They were mostly of an A-frame type home he had built. When I checked the photos for color accuracy and focus, lo and behold, there in one of the photos was a perfectly white flying saucer half as big as the house. I was amazed! But, upon checking the negatives, there was no indication of a UFO at all.
So, I printed the negative again and once it was finished, it was normal. It seems that in that particular area of the printing paper, none of the chemicals got onto that particular spot because I had the paper slightly crimped. This is not to say the photo of the miners is messed up in any way because I have had some amazing photos turn out from professional photo labs.

Respectfully
James G. Hall
Mansfield, OH

James preacher Gabby emailed me from Fl. and said he could see a face in the picture also. I can see the hat also. Strange, but like you said, anything can happen when it comes to taking pictures.

Class of 1959 News

We of the school and class of 1959 missed the opportunity to hold a 40th re-union. Several want to hold a 41st one this September 3 at the Jenny Wylie Park. If you wish to have more information please call me and I'll get the correct people to contact you. Better yet, if you can, please stop by and visit me. I live just outside of Cincinnati... (close enough to the river so I can swim to the Mother Land if times get difficult.) I always have some Pepsi (regular that is) in the refrig and it won't take long to fry up some "baloney." As Philip Hancock says, "the real stuff with mayo and lettuce." We can tell a few war stories, better known as lies.

Great Story From Guessbook

I saw Kelly play several times but will limit these comments to one particular game at Wheelwright, a Floyd County rival. Wheelwright had a nice gym for that era and a "busting at the seams" crowd turned out to see King Kelly and hopes of a Wheelwright victory. Pre-game warmups ended and the game started but no Kelly in the house. Wayland had good players other than Coleman but Wheelwright did too and the home team built up a lead by half of perhaps eight to fourteen points or so. My recollection is that as the third quarter was about to commence Kelly arrived, in street clothese of course, and proceeded to enter the gym and walk longwise directly across the court and toward the Wasp dressing room to prepare for the game. It was telling that Kelly didn't walk around the court to the visitors dressing room but opted to walk directly across the floor. Kelly had arrived. He soon entered the game and had a great half of basketball. What shots he didn't make he would either tip in or rebound and then put back in. Wayland won the game and Kelly had one of his splendid games. I don't recall how many Kelly scored but it was probably 34 or so. He also would have had 15 or so rebounds in the half. He was the king!

J. Don Gibson
Wheelwright 1958
Linving in Harrogate, TN now.

Webmaster Note: Don, a few years ago KET Televison did a interveiw with Kelly and this very subject was discussed. It was a great story that Kelly told the reporter from KET. The interviewer said he had heard Kelly had went squirel hunting that day and came into the Wheelwright Gym at hafe time with a few dead squirels and laid them on the scoreboard table and then headed into the Wayland dressing room. Kelly told the interveiwer the story was true except for the "squirels". Kelly went on to say he believed he ended up with something like 39 points at the end of the game. Long live the King of Ky Basketball..
Again, thanks for the great story and be watching out for a new book on Kelly's life being released this coming summer. That story just may be in it, but not sure.

Homecoming 2004

It was nice coming home and seeing long time friends after thirty-one years. I was surprised to see some of the old landmarks were missing i.e. ball park, tipple, soda fountain, etc. but, as always the spirit of friendship was there.

Thanks to all who worked hard to make the reunion happen. I would appreciate hearing from friends, I was in the class of '51, Minerva Franklin - email address jaycee43302@yahoo.net

Patty

First I want to say thank you and all the people who worked so hard to make this reunion great. Half way up I said why am I going back I left in the 9tyh grade and I will not know anyone. You find friends fast when you lived in Wayland. I had a wonderful time.
Now the glasses, yes they are mine, I am so thankful you found them.

Betty Reynolds

Thank You All

Just want to say a big "thank you" to all the "homecoming organizers" and those of you I saw working every minute to make sure we were all having a good time and anything we needed. It is so much appreciated, I'm sure, by all of us in attendance. I know you all do a ton of work months before the big weekend as well as get all that food together to feed us that wonderful dinner. You pulled it all together and made a wonderful weekend for us.
It is always so wonderful to see faces you haven't seen in years and I must say, everyone looks wonderful.
Also, to the Historical Society members who are responsible for that wonderful and exciting building, what a blessing you are. Thank you. I certainly look forward to returning home to see the brick walkway and wall upon completion and hopefully stay in the lovely renovated house.

Patty, Phyllis and Bill, Sandra and Doug, Hobert Jr. and Gloria, Jerry and those I missed, you're special. Thank you.
If you need my assistance, please call.

Love you
Brenda

What Brenda said (above), ditto, ditto, ditto. : )

Reunion & Hurricane Frances

I have been looking forward to the reunion ever since I learned about it, and expected to see some long-lost friends on Saturday. Unfortunately, that doesn't appear very likely right now, as we are battening down for Hurricane Frances.
They say it's just another day in paradise, but you all are a lot closer to it than we are.

I Hope Rebecca, Linda, or someone insists on having a 50-year Reunion four years from now. Living in Wayland and going to WHS was a privilege I have never forgotten.
I hope to see you all in 2008.

Ed Mandt

DreamCatcher

This has nothing to do with Wayland news but since a lot of us are Indian descendant I wanted to share something interesting I was given while traveling to Yellowstone this summer by this 'unique lady' in her Gift Shop in Wyoming. I bought one of her Indian handmade dreamcatchers and along with it she gave me this info. And though I am a Christian, I find these magical myths fascinating. God does work in mysterious ways................

Legend has it that Grandmother Spider, who sang the Universe into existance, was saddened by the bad dreams of her human children.
Grandmother Spider went to the willow tree and ask him for his beautiful branches. She went to the eagle and asked him for his powerful feather.
Then she bent the branches of the willow into a circle connecting all the people of the world. She spun her web of wisdom around the willow branches to catch her children's bad dreams.
Grandfather Sun's morning rays burned away the bad dreams tangled in the web. Any bad dreams that were left were turned into the morning dew.
These dreams trickled down the length of the eagle feather and were given to the earth.

Need Info about the Turntable

I am interested in receving information on a subscription to TheTurntable. My mom is Barbara Henegar and she still lives there on Front Street, but she doesn't get out much.I have to keep up with Wayland through The Floyd County Times and sometimes it's not up to date.I just found the wayland website and was amazed at how long it has been there. I lived in Wayland til I got married in 1998 and love to keep track of what goes on.I would appreciate some information.

Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Beth( Henegar) York

webmaster Hi Beth, glad you found us. The website is not part of the Wayland Historical Society or The Turntable, but i will find out the information for you and will be glad to post it here. It may take a few days, but i will place a call to the Historical Society and get the answer, or if anyone would want to send the website the information i would be happy to put it up.

Follow-UP
There was a time when they'd mail the Turntable to anyone who requested it, but now with the lack of funds, only dues-paying members of the Historical Society receive it. Membership fees are $20, due each year on Jan 1, and expires on Dec 31. Send check or money order to Wayland Historical Society - 2662 "King" Kelly Coleman Hwy - P.O. Box 349 - Wayland, KY 41666-0349. The Wayland Historical Society is a non-profit and the dues are tax deductible.

Hope this helps
Linda Coleman

Homecoming Suggestions

I had a few suggestions for this year's Wayland Homecoming and thought I would pass them along to you. How about hosting the first annual "Wayland Homecoming 5K run"? Or even a "3 on 3 Invitational Basketball tournament" at the park? What about a "Three legged race" or "bobbing for apples"?
The proceeds from these activities could go toward the historical society or perhaps be used for other practical purposes. The cost to enter would vary depending upon several criteria to be discussed later. Not only would these or similar sporting events be a much needed breath of fresh air to the festivities, but it could possibly evoke interest from the younger generation of Waylanders. The winner (or winners) could be given free t-shirts or a small plaque/trophies. If you have any questions, please e-mail me at
jgt42@hotmail.com

Wonderful Trip Down Memory Lane

I found your site and had to say what a wonderful trip down memory lane I've had! For the last 2 hours, I've looked at pictures of old Wayland, tried very hard to find my grandmother's house, and recognized names and faces of people I hadn't thought of in years.
First, I have to tell you, my first crush at 10 yrs. old was on Jerry Fultz. I had it bad. And Roger, what a hunk he was. It was a sin for all those looks to be in one family. I can still see Rodger sitting on the railing of the fountain porch. At 10, I wasn't allowed to hangout there, but everyone knew the fountain sold the best, coldest, popsicles in the world, at least this is what I had my grandmother convinced of.
Thanks Jerry and Rodger for all the sweetness you both showed me growing up. I must have seemed like a pesky fly. That year was 1966, and thanks to your site, I just relived it.
I spent the summers with my grandmother and grandfather in Wayland every year for 15 years. There were times, I got to go to school there too. I experienced prom in the old gym. I went with Roger Martin, president of the Jr. Class that year. It breaks my heart to think of the gym not being there. My uncle Terry Sammons played basketball for the Wasps. And I as a student there in ninth grade, followed my idols growing up, Sandra Coleman, Kim Watson, and Judy Tufts, I stood on that gym floor and cheered my heart out. My prayers are with you on your effort to preserve it.
I never knew Kelly Coleman as a basketball player other than his accomplishments. I knew him as a father. I was friends with his daughter during one of my school time stints there. He was pretty cool in that regard too.
Some of my earliest memories are of dancing with my Aunt Judy Sammons at the old fountain. I remember standing out in front of the post office in the cold waiting for Santa to come in a big truck. That was okay, because my cousin Sammy Mosely would be at my Grandma's house dressed as Santa anyway. My great Aunt Linda Mae Mosely who lived in Stamper's Branch would craft dolls and toys and send Sammy out to disperse them to families in the hollers, but he always came by to bring us our gifts from her. I remember buying candy from the big glass case at Mr & Mrs Long's store, and the big chopping table we had to walk past as we entered in the side screendoor. I must have been 4 or 5 then. I could just barely see the top of it.We had been sent with a written list, and the amount was added onto my grandfather's running account.
I have 3 daughters, the youngest is now 17, and all of them can tell you the stories of the swinging bridge, the fountain, and my first big crush. They've heard them many times. They have never seen Kentucky. I haven't seen it in 30 years. But it's never gone from me. The memories of the places and the people, and their ways. But too this day, there is no fonder memory than sitting out on my grandmothers front porch in the glider wrapped up in a quilt listening to the sound of the church bells playing Christmas carols, and the notes echoing off the mountains. Definately a memory I am thankful for.
So, thanks again for your efforts to help us all stay closer to the magic there.
