**Belarus and Denmark promoted to World
Championships 2003
**Korea and China relegated to Division II 2003.
Belarus, the surprise team of the Salt Lake City Olympics, is back in
the elite pool
of the IIHF World Championship after a one year visit in division I
while Denmark
has been waiting for this for 53 years.
Denmark, whose national hockey team has the dubious distinction of
holding the record
for the biggest loss ever in a major international championship game
(47-0 against Canada in
the 1949 World Championship in Stockholm), silenced the capacity crowd
at the Szekesfehervar
arena when Lasse Degn scored at 3.49. Bo Nordby-Andersen made 2-0 after
5.56. Kim Staal and
Thomas Johnsen put the game away midway through the game. Staal, a
Montreal Canadiens draft pick,
also added a second goal in the third.
Hungary's Levente Szuper, voted as the best goalie of the championship,
was substituted after the fourth goal.
Denmark has not played in the elite group of the IIHF World
Championship since 1949.
