Ottis Anderson

Super Bowl XXV M.V.P.

A second team All-American at Miami, Anderson broket the school rushing record. Anderson was the NFL Rookie Of The Year in 1979 when he rushed for a then rookie record of 1,605 yards. Before injuries took their toll on him, he was averaging 1,227 yards and 8 TDs his first 6 years despite missing half a season in 1982. Anderson was a valuable receiver in the Cardinals offense catching over 50 passes three times. After being traded to the Giants following week 4 of the 1986 season, Anderson missed 16 games then played sparingly for NY in 1988, primarily in short yardage situations. In 1989 Giants coach Bill Parcells made him the featured back and Anderson responded by rushing for 1,023 yards and scoring 14 TDs leading the Giants to a Division Title. He contemplated retiring after the Giants selected Georgia RB Rodney Hampton in the first round of the 1990 NFL Draft but was coaxed back by Parcells. The Giants backfield was RB by commitee in 1990 and Anderson became Parcells' reliable workhorse once again by week four. In the two years Anderson was the featured back he had 596 touches fumbling only 3 times. MVP in Super Bowl XXV rushing for 102 yards while the Giants dominated the clock with a ball control running game, setting the Super Bowl record for possession time (40 minutes, 33 seconds). Made three All-Pro teams and played in 2 Pro Bowls, Anderson currently ranks 12th on the all time rushing ist and his 81 rushing TDs is 10th best.
