The M.V.P. of the N.B.A. in the 1972-73 season while a member of the Kansas City-Omaha Kings, Archibald became the first and only player to lead the league in scoring and assists in the same season. Archibald started his collegiate career at Arizona Western before transferring to the University of Texas at El Paso where he graduated from in 1970. He was selected in the second round of the 1970 N.B.A. draft by the Cincinnati Royals. A first team All-N.B.A. selection in 1973, '75 and '76, Archibald played in seven All-Star games and was the M.V.P. of the 1981 game, the same season in which he won a championship as a member of the Boston Celtics. His career spanned 14 seasons with six different teams. Archibald was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991.
