Born in Jamaica, Barnes began his career with Waterford in 1982, later transferred to Liverpool in 1987. He played for England in the 1986 World Cup and amassed a total of 79 caps and 12 goals in his international career. While with Liverpool, Barnes won the League Cup in 1995 and was twice voted the Football Writer's Association Footballer of the Year.
