Gaetan Boucher
Two-time Olympic Champion, Speed Skating
Boucher won his first medal, a silver, behind Eric Heiden in the 1000 meters. He won the World Short Track championship in 1977 and 1980, but this was before it was recognized by the I.S.U. as a World Championship event. Concentrating on long track, Boucher established a reputation of doing poorly in the big meets. At the 1984 Olympics, Boucher began by capturing a bronze in the 500 meters. He then went on to capture gold medals in 1000 meters and the 1500 meters. He also took his first ever World Sprint Championship that same year. Boucher continued until the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, but could do no better than fifth at 1000 meters.
