Eamonn Coghlan
1983 World 5000 Meter Champion.
Coghlan of Ireland won the 5000 meters at the first World Track and Field Championships in Helsinki in 1983, but he's best known as the greatest indoor miler of his era (and perhaps of all-time). He set the world indoor mile mark of 3:49.78 at the New Jersey Meadowlands in 1983 and won seven Wanamaker Miles at New York's Millrose Games. He also became the first (and thus far only) masters miler to break 4:00 by clocking 3:58.15 at Harvard University's indoor oval in 1994. The Olympics were not as kind to Coghlan, he finished fourth in the 1500 Meters in 1976 and fourth again in the 5000 Meters in 1980. Ranked in the top 10 in the world five times over 1500 Meters, (1975-10th, '76-7th, '77-10th, '78-2nd, '79-6th). He then concentrated on the 5000 Meters, ranking three times in the top 10 (1980-6th, '81-1st and '83-2nd).
