1968 Olympic Champion - 400 Meters and 4x400 Meter Relay
Evans won the 1968 Olympic trials with a world record of 44.0 and bettered the record again the in the Olympic final, winning in a time of 43.86. Evans won a second gold as the anchorman on the 4x400 meter relay team, setting another world record of 2:56.12. Both the times stood as world records for 20 years. After winning the Amateur Athletic Union 400 meter titles in 1969 and 1972, Evans finished fourth in the 1972 Olympic Trials, and was named a member of the 4x400 meter relay team. However, the United States could not field a team because Vincent Matthews and Wayne Collett were suspended for a demonstration during the medal ceremony of the 400 meters and John Smith was injured in the semifinals. Evans joined the International Track Association in 1973 and went on to head the national athletics programs in six different African nations before accepting a position as head cross country/track and field coach at the University of South Alabama. Evans was ranked number one in the world in 1966, '67, '68 and '71, he was ranked second in '69 and third in '72.
