Dick Fosbury
1968 Olympic High Jump Champion
Dick Fosbury won the high jump with his back-over the bar style that is known
today as the "Fosbury Flop." At Oregon State University, Fosbury didn't
clear seven feet until the 1968 indoor season and was a surprise winner at Mexico
City by clearing 7-4 1/4 for Olympic and American records. A two-time national collegiate
champion, Fosbury made his record jump on this third attempt. He was top ranked in
the world following his 1968 victory and in 1969 won the NCAA title before placing
second in the National AAU meet. He failed to make the 1972 Olympic team and became
a professional in1973. He was elected to the U.S. Track and Field Hall of Fame in
1981 and to the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1992.
