Jane Frederick
1987 World Championship bronze medalist in the heptathlon
America's top pentathlete/heptathlete for over a decade, Frederick was the rop American prior to the emergence of Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Frederick finished seventh at the 1976 Olympic pentathlon, only 179 points off the lead. She failed to make the U.S. Olympic team in 1984 due to a no-height in the high jump. The following year, Track and Field News ranked her number one in the world. Her swan song was at the 1987 World Championships where she finished third behind Joyner-Kersee to earn a bronze medal. Frederick ranked in the top 10 in the world eleven times, first in '85 and second in '78.
