Member of the Basketball Hall of Fame
Elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1989, Hayes first came to prominence in 1968 while at the University of Houston. On January 20, 1968 Hayes outduelled Lew Alcindor as Houston ended U.C.L.A.'s 47 game winning streak. Hayes was named the Sporting News College Basketball Players of the Year. A 12-time all-star, Hayes stands sixth in N.B.A. history in scoring (27,313 points) and fourth in rebounds (16,279). He led the Washington Bullets to the N.B.A. championship in 1978 over the Seattle SuperSonics. Hayes was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1990 and was named to the N.B.A.'s 50th Anniversary team in 1996.
