Hilgenberg was a linebacker who played collegiate ball at Iowa and was drafted in the fourth round by the Detroit Lions in 1964. After the 1967 season he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but was waived by the Steelers and picked up by the Minnesota Vikings. He played for the Vikings from 1968 to 1979, appearing in Super Bowls IV, VII, IX and XI. He died in 2008 after a battle with ALS.
