Evander Holyfield
World Heavyweight Boxing Champion
Holyfield had qualified for the 1984 Olympics and made it to the semifinals. He was in the process of defeated New Zealand's Kevin Barry, when he did not hear the referee's signal to stop and hit Barry, knocking him out. Since Barry was unable to continue and Holyfield had hit him after the stop command, Holyfield was disqualified in a highly controversial decision. Holyfield gracefully accepted the bronze medal and moved on to a professional career. Holyfield won his first world title, the W.B.A. Cruiserweight title over Dwight Muhammad Qawi in 1986. He moved up to heavyweight and became undisputed world heavyweight champion with a 1990 victory over Buster Douglas. He lost the title to Riddick Bowe in 1992, but recaptured it a year later. He lost the title to Michael Moorer in 1994, but won it for the third time with a 11th round knockout of Mike Tyson in 1996. He won his fifth title with a 1999 victory over John Ruiz.
