John had a short international career, with 25 caps for Wales and 5 for the British Lions. He made his international debut against Australia in 1966 and debuted for the British Lions against South Africa in 1968. In 1971, he scored a record 188 points in a tour of Australia and New Zealand. He earned the nickname "King John" and shocked Welsh fans when he retired from the game in March of 1972 at age 27, citing the pressure of fame. John was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997.
