Michael Johnson

Five-time Olympic champion

Johnson established himself as one of the greatest athletes of all time. He won his first major championship in the 200 meters at the 1991 World Championships. At the 1992 Olympic Games, Johnson sufffered from food poisoning and was eliminated in the semifinals of the 2200 meters. He won a gold medal as a part of the 4x400 meter relay. In 1993, Johnson won the gold medal at the World Championships in the 400 meters and was also part of the 4x400 meter relay. At the 1995 World Championships, Johnson won three gold medals in the 200, 400 and 4x400. At the 1996 Olympic Trials, Johnson broke the 17-year old world record of Pietro Mannea with a time of 19.66. At the Olympics in Atlanta, Johnson became the first man to win the 200 and 400 at the Olympics and capped it with an astounding world record in the 200 of 19.32. Johnson won the 400 meter World Championship. In 1998, he anchored the U.S. to a world record of 2:54.20 in the 4x400 at the Goodwill Games. In 1999, he finally set a world record of 43.18 over 400 meters in winning the World Championships, and won his record 9th gold medal in anchoring the relay again. He won his fifth Olympic Gold medal in 2000 in the 400 meters. He was ranked number one in the world in the 200 five time (1990, '91, '94-'96) and ten times in the 400 (1990, '91, '93-2000).
