1964 Olympic Slalom Silver Medalist
Kidd was the first American man (along with Jimmy Heuga in the same race) to earn an Olympic medal in alpine skiing. Kidd took the silver and Huega the bronze in the 1964 slalom. That helped Kidd win a World Championship bronze medal in the combined as well. From 1956 to 1980, the Olympic Games also doubled as the World Championships and the combined event (downhill and slalom) was a World Championship event, but not an Olympic medal event. At the 1970 World Championships in Val Gardena, Italy, Kidd became the first American man to win a World Championship, capturing the gold medal in the combined. He also added a bronze medal in the slalom. Kidd captured two World Cup victories in his career and later became a television ski commentator, known for wearing his cowboy hat on the slopes.
