Winner of 20 Wimbledon Titles
Certainly one of the most influential sports persons of all-time, King had a combination of talent and timing that vaulted her to legendary status. She won a record 20 Wimbledon championships, 6 in singles, 10 in doubles and 4 in mixed doubles. She won a total of 39 Grand Slam titles, including 12 singles victories. To go with her 6 Wimbledons, are 4 U.S. Opens and one each from France and Australia. She won a total of 71 open titles. King came along at a time when tennis was beginning to become an open sport, she helped establish the Women's Tennis Association Tour as well at World Team Tennis and the Women's Sports Foundation. Her most famous moment came in the 1973 "Battle of the Sexes" as she took on former men's Wimbledon champion Bobby Riggs, who had defeated Margaret Court, in the Astrodome and before a television audience of 50 million and defeated him in straight sets. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987.
