Karch Kiraly
Three-time Olympic Champion, volleyball.
Kiraly is the only volleyball player to ever win three Olympic gold medals. He was a four-time All-American at U.C.L.A. and went on to play for the national team. He was one of the leaders on a young, surprising team that won the gold medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Following the games and the retirement of Chris Marlowe, Kiraly was named team captain. The U.S. squad proved that the Olympic gold was no fluke as they won the 1985 World Cup, the 1986 World Championships and the 1988 Olympics. Kiraly retired from the national team to pursue a career in beach volleyball. He missed the 1992 games, but came back for the 1996 games in Atlanta as beach volleyball made its Olympic debut. Kiraly, already perhaps the best player in beach history, teamed with Kent Steffes to win his third Olympic championship.
