Marty Liquori
Member of the United States Track and Field Hall of Fame.
One of only four high school runners to break four minutes for the mile, Marty
Liquori attended Villanova University. While running for the Wildcats, he won three-straight
NCAA one mile titles from 1969 to 1971, also capturing the National AAU one mile
titles in 1969 and 1970. In all, he won 14 national titles ranging from one mile
to 5,000 meters. He competed in the 1968 Olympic Games, placing 12th in the 1,500,
but won the 1971 Pan American Games title at the same distance. He also was second
in the 5,000 at the 1977 World Cup. He was number one ranked in the world twice at
1,500 meters (1969 and 1971) and once at 5,000 meters (1977). Injury prevented Liquori
from competing in the 1972 and 1976 Olympics Games, where he would have been a definite
medal contender.
