Phil Mahre
1984 Olympic Slalom Champion
Phil Mahre is unquestionably the best male skiier in American history. Together with his twin brother, Steve, Phil came up in the world ranks in the late 1970's. A broken ankle cost him much of his 1979 season, and it required delicate surgery and intense physical therapy. In 1980 Mahre surprised many by leading the Olympic slalom after the first run. Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark came back in the second run to win the gold, but Mahre captured the silver medal. He continued to surprise the skiing world by winning the overall World Cup titles in 1981, '82 and '83. However, his fortunes seemed on a downward turn entering the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo. He had not won a race all season, and only finished ninth in the giant slalom. The slalom was held on the last day of the games, but it was the right time for the Mahre twins. Steve led after the first run with Phil fourth, as many of the top skiiers failed to finish the challenging course. This time Phil came roaring back to beat his brother and complete a gold-silver family finish. The Mahre brothers retired following the 1984 season from the World Cup curcuit. Phil made a comeback on the U.S. Pro Tour a few years later and continued to enjoy success.
