1998 Olympic Super G and Giant Slalom Champion
Maier, once removed from the Austrian team, trained on his own and made the team for the 1996-'97 season. Maier won the overall World Cup title in 1997-'98, 1999-2000 and 2000-'01. He won two gold medals at the 1998 Olympics. He won the Downhill and the Super G at the 1999 World Championships in Vail. Maier was injured in a motorcycle accident in August of 2001, which nearly caused amputation of his leg. He missed the 2002 Olympics, but came back for the 2002-'03 season, winning a silver medal at the World Championships in the Super G. He has won 44 World Cup races to date in his career.
