Maravich played for the Atlanta Hawks and New Orleans Jazz in the N.B.A., leading the league in scoring in 1976-'77. Maravich was a five-time NBA All-Star and was selected All-NBA First Team in 1976 and '77. A leg injury in 1978 and a descent into alcoholism led to his early retirement in 1980. He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1986. Maravich died of a heart attack stemming from an undetected congenital heart condition while playing a pickup basketball game in Pasadena, California. Maravich was forty years old.
