Syndey Maree
World Record Holder 1500 Meters.
Maree set the world record over 1500 meters in Cologne, Germany while a South African citizen competing for the United States. The double victim of apartheid, the black Maree could not compete internationally because of his government's injustice to his own people. A Villanova grad, Maree eventually became a U.S. citizen in time for the 1984 Olympics, although he qualified, he was injured and unable to compete. He did compete in the 1988 Olympics over 5000 meters, finishing fifth. He still is the only American to run under 3:30 for 1500 meters. He ranked among the world's top ten at both 1500 meters (1982-5th, '82-3rd, '83-7th, '85-3rd, '86-8th) and 5000 meters (1979-10th, '85-3rd, '86-10th, '87-9th, '88-6th, '89-5th).
