May was born in Scotland, but switched her national affiliation and began competing for Italy in 1994. In 1995, she won the World Championship and took the Olympic silver medal in 1996. She was a World Championship bronze medalist in 1997 and won a silver medal in 1999. At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, she won another silver medal. May won her second World Championship in 2001 in Edmonton. Never ranked number one in the world, May ranked second in 1995, '97, '99, 2000 and '01.
