1988 Olympic silver medalist, 10000 meters
McColgan, who so often pushed a furious pace in major championships, took a silver medal at the 1988 Olympics in the 10000 meters, being outsprinted by Soviet Olga Bondarenko. McColgan won 1991 World Championship in Tokyo. She finished 5th at the 1992 Olympics, and 6th at the 1995 World Championships. In 1996, McColgan moved up to the marathon. She won the 1996 London Marathon and finished 16th in the Olympics in Athens. McColgan was ranked in the top ten in the world at 10000 meters six times, and ranked number one in 1991. Over the marathon distance, she ranked 7th in 1996 and 8th in 1998.
