Merry finished fifth at the 1999 World Championship, took the bronze medal at the 2000 Olympic Games and her time of 49.59 seconds was the best in the world in 2001. Injuries and illness kept her out of the major championships in 2001, 2002 and 2003. She was a member of the 2004 British Olympic team as part of the relay pool, but did not compete. She was ranked 6th in the world in 1999, 3rd in 2000 and 5th in 2001.
