Brian Oldfield

Track & Field (Shot Put)
B: June 1, 1945
Unofficial World Record Holder in the Shot Put
Sixth at the 1972 Olympics, Oldfield joined the International Track Association in the early 1970's and set an unofficial world record in the shout put of 75 feet in 1975. Since the record was not set in amateur competition, it was not recognized by the International Amateur Athletics Federation. The official world record would not be over 75 feet until 1987. He had also set an unofficial world indoor record of 72'10" in 1973. Oldfield regained his amateur status in 1980 and set the official American Record of 72'9" in 1984. Oldfield was ranked among the top ten in the world by Track and Field News six times between 1969 and 1984, with his best being a second place in 1981.
