Perreault played seventeen seasons with the Buffalo Sabres of the N.H.L. In 1970, two expansion franchises joined the N.H.L., Buffalo and the Vancouver Canucks. By luck of a roulette wheel, the Sabres won the first overall pick in the amateur draft over the Canucks. This was the first year that the Montreal Canadiens did not have a priority right to draft Quebecois junior players. Perreault was chosen as the first pick in the draft the the Sabres. He won Calder Trophy as the Rookie of the Year in 1971. Perreault was named to Team Canada for the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union, but only saw action in two games and left before the series ended. He won the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship in 1973. Perreault was selected for the 1976 Canadian team for the Canada Cup, and the Canadians won the series after beating Czechoslovakia in a best two-out-of-three final. Perreault retired at the end of the 1986 season, but came out of retirement to take advantage of new pension benefit and retired again after playing twenty games. In his career, Perreault scored 521 goals and had 814 assists. His best season was 1975-'76 when he scored 44 goals and 113 points. At the time of his retirement, Perreault was the sixth leading scorer in N.H.L. history. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990.
