Derek Redmond
Great Britain
Track & Field (400 Meters)
B: September 3, 1965
1991 World Championship gold medalist, 4x400 meter relay
Redmond ranked sixth in the world in 1987 and battled through injuries over the next five seasons. He was a member of the British 4x400 meter relay team that won the gold medal at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo. He was in top form for the 1992 Olympic Games. He will be forever remembered for his courage during the 400 meter semifinals. After about 150 meters, Redmond popped his hamstring and hobbled around the track to complete the race. When his father dodged security to help him over the last 150 meters, created one of the most moving and memorable moments of the Olympic Games.
