1979 Formula One World Driving Champion

Scheckter was born in South Africa and moved to England in 1970. In 1972, he began racing on the Formula one circuit with McLaren. The following season he won the Formula 5000 championship and raced five times. Tyrrell gave Scheckter a full-time ride in 1974 and he finished third in the driver's standings while winning Grand Prix races in Sweden and Britain. Scheckter finished third in the standings again in 1976 and was runner-up to Niki Lauda in 1977. In 1977, he won the first of his two Monaco Grand prix races, the second would come in 1979. Scheckter rode for Ferrari during the 1979 season and won three races en route to the driver's championship. After finishing 19th in the driver's championship in 1980, Scheckter retired from Formula One racing. Scheckter's son Tomas is a racer on the Indycar series and also a Superstars competitor.
