First Woman to win a Stakes Race
A jockey, Smith was orphaned as a child. In 1969 she was a rider in the first race to feature all female jockeys. In 1973 she won the Paumanok Handicap at Aqueduct and became the first woman to win a stakes race in horse racing. That year she met Fred Astaire and married him in 1980, despite a 43 year age difference.
