First Man to Vault 18 Feet Indoors
A 1972 U.S. Olympian in the pole vault, Smith finished 18th in the qualifying round in Munich and failed to advance to the final. He reached his best years with the I.T.A. in the mid 1970's. He set a world indoor best of 18 feet, 1 inch in 1974 and was ranked number one in the world by Track & Field News for 1973.
