Joe Theismann
1983 N.F.L. Most Valuable Player
Graduate of Notre Dame in 1971, Theismann was the runner-up to Jim Plunkett in the Heisman Trophy voting. He played two years in the Canadian Football League beofre joining the Washington Redskins in 1974. He quarterbacked the Redskins for 12 seasons, leading the Redskins to a victory in Super Bowl XVII. The following season he was selected as the N.F.L. M.V.P. in leading to Redskins into another Super Bowl, which they lost to the Raiders. He was also selected as the M.V.P. of the Pro Bowl. In 1985 his career ended when he suffered a compound fracture of his leg being sacked by Lawrence Taylor. He was worked as an E.S.P.N. football anaylst since then.
