Kurt Thomas
Two-time World Gymnastics Champion
Thomas won the first ever gold medal for the United States at the World Gymnastics Championships by capturing the gold on the floor exercise in 1978, the following year he won the high bar and finished second in the all-around. He won the 1979 Sullivan Award as the nation's outstanding amatuer athlete, the first gymnast to win the award. His chance at Olympic glory was crushed by the politcal mechanations of Jimmy Carter.
