1968 Olympic Decathlon Champion
Toomey captured the 1968 Decathlon gold medal, and established a world record of 8,417 points in 1969. He had previously set a world record of 8,234 points in 1966. Toomey was ranked number one in the world by Track and Field News in 1966, '68 and '69; he was 3rd in 1965 and 2nd in 1967. In 1969, Toomey won the James E. Sullivan Award as the nation's top amateur athlete.
