1964 & 1968 Olympic 100 Meter Champion
Tyus was the first person to win the 100 meter dash at consecutive Olympics, winning in 1964 in Tokyo and 1968 in Mexico City. In Mexico City she also led the United States to gold in the 4x100 meter relay and set a world record of 11.08 second in the 100 meters. She was sixth at 200 meters in Mexico City and captured a silver in the 4x100 meter relay in 1964. In 1967, she won the gold medal over 200 meters at the Pan American Games. Tyus later ran on the professional International Track Association circuit, winning all 22 events she entered in 1974. Tyus was ranked first in the world at 100 meters by Track & Field News in 1964 & '68.
