Wottle won the 1972 NCAA Championship at 1500 meters. At the Olympic Trials, he tied the world record of 1:44.3 for 800 meters. Wottle made a memorable charge to rally from last place in the Olympic final and edge Soviet Yevhen Arzhanov at the wire by .03 seconds. He also ran in the 1500 meters in Munich, failing to advance to the final after finishing fourth in his semifinal. Wottle was ranked #1 in the world in 1972 and seventh in 1973 when he won the NCAA championship for the mile run.
