2003 BRITISH SUPERSTARS HEAT 2

Given football's poor track record in Superstars, few would have backed a 37-year-old non league striker to win this group. But Steve Claridge did just that, bringing to bear his considerable experience and boundless tenacity to edge ahead of Tony Underwood and Chris Boardman. Weymouth FC's player-manager stunned everyone in the opening sprint and also excelled in golf, on a bike and in the gym tests. And younger Underwood brother Tony shrugged off injury to march into the final as runner-up. Older sibling Rory - England's record rugby union try scorer - failed to stay the pace. After losing the eagerly-anticipated Underwood sprint-out, he laboured to last place in the bicycle race and had to console himself with victory in the swim. Sport Relief runner-up Boardman was unlucky to miss out. Despite two wins, the Tour de France cyclist ran out of events and could only sit and watch as his overall lead disappeared.

Athletes Darren Campbell and Iwan Thomas promised much, but failed to deliver consistent performances. Thomas set outstanding times in the 800m and the bike race, only to capitulate in almost every other event. Cricketer Dermot Reeve and jockey Peter Scudamore found the going generally tough. And good-natured boxer Steve Collins, battling away above his ideal boxing weight, used humour and the threat of violence to draw a veil over his below-par showing.
