1976 SUPERTEAMS FINAL

Honolulu, Hawaii

Commentators: Keith Jackson & Reggie Jackson.

In a rare match-up of both World Champions, the Steelers came from behind to beat the Reds. Controversy swirled during the obstacle course. When the Reds were given choice of lane by virtue of losing the previous event, they chose the "red wall." The Steelers protested that the "red wall" was easier to scale than the "yellow wall" and both Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier slipped on the wall. The rules did not allow for the lanes to alternate during the obstacle course, and the Reds won. The rules were changed the following year. One rule that was changed for 1976 came in the outrigger war canoe, in 1975 professionals from the Hawaii area were used to turn the boats and the athletes from the participating teams paddled up and down the lanes. However, this year the crew was made up entirely of participating athletes. This is where the difference in the competition was made as Rocky Bleier was better at helping his team make than Joe Morgan was, the Steelers won easily and then won the decisive tug-of-war in a lightning fast 9.83 seconds.
