1982 MEN'S PRELIMINARY #1
Schmidt and Garvey battled throughout the competition. Garvey was first and Schmidt second in the tennis, golf and bowling, but Schmidt's wins in swimming and weight lifting placed him first over Garvey by three points entering the 100 yard dash. Garvey finished ahead of Schmidt in third place, but Schmidt was given fourth place on a phot finish over Rick Dempsey to edge Garvey in the overall by one point. The obstacle course final decided third place as boxing rivals Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns battled. Hearns two penalties left him in second place and gave third place to Gary Carter by one point.
