1986 MEN'S PRELIMINARY #2
The preliminary featured three of the top 4 finishers from the 1985 final in Gastineau, Gault and Clayton. Gault ended up winning over volleyball Olympic champion Dusty Dvorak on a tie-breaker. Gault beat Dvorak in three of their five head-to-head events. Defending Superstars champion Mark Gastineau finished third despite scratching from the last three events. Gastineau built an early lead. He got off to a fast start in the 50 yard swimming race and held off Dvorak to win the vent. Dvorak easily won tennis to take the overall lead. Gastineau won the weight lifting, but he was pushed by 180-pound Mark Clayton who lifted 290 pounds. Clayton was the favorite in the bowling and he rolled a 182 in qualifying but couldn't muster anything in the three frame final against Fulton Walker, losing 35-23. Dvorak won the golf to reclaim the lead and finished second to Gastineau in the rowing as Gastineau won easily by over 5 seconds. Gastineau qualified for the bike final, but scratched from the race to save himself for the upcoming Superstars final, Coleman passed early leader Walker to take the event with Gault second. Boxer Tim Witherspoon took out the early lead in the half mile run with Clayton trailing, but both men faded over the last half lap as Gault sprinted past the field to win going away. Gault came up with another win and set a Superstars record of 9.35 seconds in the 100 ayrd dash. Gary Anderson just edged Coleman for second place as the top three finishers all ran under 9.9 seconds. With just the obstacle course remaining, Gault, Dvorak and Gastineau had clinched spots in the Superstars final. Walker, Coleman, Anderson and Clayton were fighting for the last two spots. Anderson lost his chance, despite running a 22.83 second obstacle course he was charged with a penalty on the water hazard and failed to score in the event. Clayton won the obstacle course and Coleman and Walker ended up tied for fifth, so both men advanced to the Superstars final.
