1987 MEN'S FINAL
A very strong competition as Herschel Walker took his first title by out distancing four men who had previous top three finishes, Gastineau (1st-'85, 3rd-'82) Gault (3rd-'85), Foster (2nd-'84) and Coleman (2nd-'86) Records were set by Gary Anderson in basketball and Walker broke Wayne Grimditch's 11 year old record in the half mile bike race. Mark Gastineau went over the $100,000 mark in career Superstars winnings. Competition was very tight in rowing, bike race and the obstacle course. The overall title came down to a battle between Herschel Walker and Willie Gault in an effort to overtake Mark Gastineau. The 100 yard dash was as close as possible with Gault declared the winner over Walker. It came down to the obstacle course, the key heat was between Gary Anderson and Greg Foster as both barely committed penalties. Anderson's foot fault on the water jump and Foster knocked over the high bar with his trail leg in a hurdle attempt. Had neither man had a penalty, their times would have been the two best and that would have given Gastineau the title with 35 points, Walker with 34 1/2 and Gault 34. Had only one of them committed a penalty, Gault would have won the overall event. As it was, Herschel Walker held onto a 1 1/2 point victory over his longtime rival Willie Gault.
