1988 VETERANS SUPERSTARS
1968 Olympic 110 hurdles champion Willie Davenport won the second annual veteran Superstars, Davenport had tried for years during the 1970's to gain entry to the Superstars competition, but was never invited. Had he been, he could have been a real contender. The ruling to allow Davenport to enter the 100 yard dash was in conflict with other 110 hurdlers in the past (Rod Milburn, Guy Drut, Renaldo Nehimiah, Greg Foster) and it allowed Davenport to win the overall competition over basketball's Calvin Murphy. Also of note, high jump Olympic champion Dick Fosbury could not clear the high bar in the obstacle course and Joe Frazier's 15.8 100 yard dash and 1:10.03 obstacle course may be the slowest times ever in those events. Also, for the fourth straight time, Bob Beamon pulled out of the competition early due to illness or in jury, this time a pulled groin muscle in the 100 yard dash (see 78 final, 82 preliminary 2 & 87 veterans).
